İdeal Kadınlar Atlası, 2016
İdeal Kadınlar Atlası, Türkiyeli kadın stereotiplerine odaklanan performatif bir fotoğraf projesidir. Bu projede Şimşek, makyaj, jest ve kostüm aracılığıyla görünüşünü dönüştürerek Türkiye toplumunda dolaşımda olan farklı kadın temsillerine bürünür ve kamera karşısında poz verir. Sanatçı, kameranın önünde bulunmanın ve poz vermenin temsil üretimindeki rolünü araştırırken, aynı zamanda kimlik ve öznellik kavramlarını performatif bir yöntemle sorgular.
Bu tebdil-i kıyafet ve maskelenme pratiği, bütünlüklü ve sabit bir kimlik fikrine dair krizler üretmeyi amaçlar. Türkiye’de kadınlar çoğu zaman Batılı/Doğulu, modern/muhafazakâr, eğitimli/cahil, laik/dindar, köylü/kentli gibi ikili karşıtlıklar içinde, ideolojik ve kültürel farklılıkların simgeleri olarak konumlandırılır. Oysa kimlik üzerine düşünmek, bu ikiliklerin ötesinde yeni düşünme biçimleri geliştirmeyi gerektirir. İdeal Kadınlar Atlası, Şimşek’in kimlik mefhumunun kültürel ve politik boyutlarını görünür kılma ve bu kavrama dair sorular üretme yöntemi olarak değerlendirilebilir.

Atlas of Idealized Women, 2016
Atlas of Idealized Women is a performative photography project focusing on stereotypes of women in Turkey. In this series, Şimşek manipulates her appearance through make-up, gesture, and costume, embodying various female figures circulating within Turkish society and posing before the camera. By foregrounding the act of posing and being in front of the camera, the artist investigates the processes of self-representation while undertaking a performative inquiry into notions of identity and subjectivity.
This practice of disguise and masquerade seeks to produce crises in the idea of a unified and stable identity. In Turkey, women are often defined as symbols of ideological and cultural differences through binary oppositions such as Western/Eastern, modern/conservative, educated/uneducated, secular/religious, rural/urban. Yet, thinking about identity requires finding new paths beyond such dichotomies. Atlas of Idealized Women can thus be read as Şimşek’s method of reflecting on the cultural and political dimensions of identity and generating critical questions around its construction.
